Last October 23 and 24 we celebrated in Valencia, Spain, the 6th Annual IARPP-Spain conference. About 173 attendees from seven different countries came to Valencia. The topic of the conference was Psychoanalysis, Contexts, and Evolution: Psychotherapy and its Social Contexts. It was focused on how society and culture influence both the patient and the psychotherapist. As special guests we were happy to host Malcolm Slavin and the IARPP President, Susanna Federici.
In the opening presentation Slavin presented his paper, “We Need Art So We Do Not Die of the Truth: An Existential-Adaptive Perspective on Art, Music, and Psychotherapy.” The discussants were Raimundo Guerra (Chair of the conference) and Ramón Riera. On Saturday morning Susanna Federici presented her paper about an interesting clinical case entitled “Today I Feel You…As More of a Person: Negotiation of the Paradox of Being for Oneself and for the Other.” Mal Slavin and Silvia Jiménez showed their clinical sensitivity through their valuable comments regarding Federici´s case. A tribute to the Spanish psychoanalyst Joan Coderch was a special moment during the conference. Alejandro Ávila-Espada (President of the IARPP-Spain chapter), Alejandra Plaza (President of IARPP-Mexico), Rosario Castaño, Neri Daurella and Joan Coderch participated in this part of the program. It was the most emotional moment of the conference, especially when Raimundo Guerra gave a commemorative plaque to Joan Coderch and the audience stood up and applauded for two minutes.
Also, at this Spanish conference we had an invited panel with Rosa Velasco who presented her research about children and their interactions with their mothers, as well as two other very interesting panels with practical and valuable papers presented. There was also a scientific poster session, with all the attendees voting on their favorite. The winners were Mario Castaño, Carmen Cortés, and Laura Tormo, with a poster about development of communication in psychotherapy. To round out the meeting, we had dinner in a restaurant at the Mediterranean Sea, during which the organizing committee gave Alejandro Ávila-Espada a special gift in recognition of his ten years as President of the IARPP-Spain Chapter.

Durante los días 23 y 24 de Octubre, alrededor de 173 asistentes de siete países diferentes asistieron a las sextas Jornadas IARPP-España en Valencia. El tema de las jornadas fue “Psicoanálisis, contextos y evolución. La psicoterapia y sus contextos sociales . Cuyo foco era como la sociedad y la cultura influyen tanto al psicoterapeuta como al paciente.
Estuvimos muy contentos de tener como invitados especiales a Malcom Slavin y la Presidenta de IARPP internacional, Susanna Federici.
En la conferencia inaugural M. Slavin presentó su ponencia “Necesitamos arte para no morir por la verdad. Una perspectiva existencial y adaptativa sobre arte, música y psicoterapia”.
Los discutidores fueron Raimundo Guerra (Presidente del Comité organizador) y Ramón Riera.
El sabado por la mañana Susanna Federici presentó su trabajo con un interesante caso clínico Hoy te siento…más que como a una persona”. M. Slavin y Silvia Jiménez mostraron en la discusión su sensibilidad clínica a través de valiosos comentarios acerca del caso de Federici.
El homenaje al psicoanalísta y psiquiatra español Joan Coderch fue el momento más especial de las Jornadas. A. Ávila-Espada (President de IARPP España), Alejandra Plaza (Presidenta de IARPP México), Rosario Castaño, Neri Daurella y Joan Coderch participaron en el acto. Fué el momento más emotivo de la conferencia, especialmente cuando R. Guerra le entregó una placa conmemorativa a J. Coderch y la audiencia se puso en pie y estuvo aplaudiendo durante dos minutos.
También en las jornadas, tuvimos la ponencia invitada de Rosa Velasco que presentó sus resultados en la investigación con niños y su interacción con madres. También fueron muy interesantes las otras dos mesas de conferencias con ponencias muy prácticas y valiosas.
Hubo también exhibición de posters científicos, en los cuales todos los asistentes pudieron votar para elegir el mejor. Los ganadores fueron Mario Castaño, Carmen Cortés y Laura Tormo con su poster acerca del desarrollo de la comunicación en psicoterapìa. Para finalizar las jornadas tuvimos una cena especial en un restaurante a pie del mar mediterraneo, durante la cual el comité organizativo entregó un obsequio especial a Alejandro Ávila-Espada en reconocimiento a sus 10 años como presidente de la IARPP España.
