Stephen Mitchell was one of the founding voices of the Relational Perspective. During his relatively brief life, he revisioned the work of many major traditional and contemporary theorists of psychoanalysis within an interaction paradigm  in addition to adding his own unique viewpoints. It is our hope that by revisiting one of his most representative papers, a chapter in one of his most influential texts, we will initiate a discussion that examines the value of comparative thinking and in doing so, highlights the varying advantages and limitations of different ways to organize one’s experience of a clinical interaction. This is a conversation that has been gaining increasing traction in considerations of the strengths and limitations of any psychoanalytic approach to treatment, and one that will no doubt transfer from our online forum to Toronto when IARPP convenes its next international conference in June, 2015.  Additionally, and  particularly for those who have never seen or heard Stephen Mitchell, please watch the video below of Stephen Mitchell presenting some of his most interesting ideas.
