Nonetheless, concerns about conforming and being accepted are deeply pervasive.<\/p>\n<p><em>What is Normal?<\/em>\u00a0torques its way through the highly current topic with reflections from a variety of psychotherapists, including Andrew Samuels, Susie Orbach, Doris Brothers and Stephen Seligman.\u00a0Biographical accounts of formative moments, powerful sociopolitical analyses, queering and case vignettes challenge the very concept of \u2018normality.\u2019 From couples work to climate change and cultural schizophrenia, this Confer Books title traverses a wide range of territories.\u00a0Co-editors Roz Carroll and Jane Ryan treat us to refreshing novelty in places: a music playlist accompanies reflections on Black experiences of slavery \u2013 cue Dennis Brown\u2019s \u201cRevolution.\u201d Elsewhere, a much loved, recently departed therapist\u2019s memoir rests alongside recollections of degrading institutional treatment and reflections on modern masculinity. Short punchy chapters break up sedimented ideas.<\/p>\n<p>Through these stories and discussions, it emerges that our very uniqueness, oddness and differences as individuals are what make us fully human. She was a founding co-editor in 2005 of the\u00a0<em>Journal of Body, Movement and Dance in Psychotherapy<\/em>.\u00a0She is the author of numerous articles and chapters, including\u00a0\u201cFour Relational Modes of Attending to the Body in Psychotherapy\u201d\u00a0in <em>Talking Bodies\u00a0<\/em>(2014) edited by Kate White, and\u00a0\u201cThe Blood-Dimmed Tide: Witnessing War and Working with the Collective Body in Authentic Movement\u201d in the\u00a0<em>Journal of Psychotherapy and Politics International<\/em>\u00a0(2015).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jane Ryan<\/strong> is Creative Director of Confer,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.confer.uk.com\/aboutus.html\">www.confer.uk.com\/aboutus.html<\/a>. She\u00a0trained as a psychotherapist at the Centre for Attachment-Based Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy (CAPP).
