It is our pleasure to report back on our most recent colloquium offering: Julie Gerhardt\u2019s 2020 paper, \u201cThe Traumatic No Man\u2019s Land of Psychic Devastation: Beyond Mourning and Melancholia\u201d (Psychoanalytic Perspectives<\/em>, 17:1, 84-106).<\/p>\n

Each colloquium develops its own unique course, tone, coloring and pace. This one was rooted in deep sorrow and held a gravity that clearly set it apart from daily, run-of-the-mill routine.\u00a0Its entry point was the moment of death, when things as we know them change. After such moments we rarely join the regular course of time as we left it. We are marked, scarred, transformed, sometimes larger than we were before, sometimes depleted.<\/p>\n

Julie invited us to pause at this very moment when all changes. She guided us to challenge the known signifiers of grief, mourning and melancholia, to reveal what they simultaneously refer to and cover up. We thank her for this nudge beyond known significations, back into the rawness of feeling, the bewildered states of emotion, the experienced inability to draw meaning from loss. We appreciated the contributions of all those who tentatively, bravely shared their moments with us, through their personal and analytic encounters with them.<\/p>\n

At some point death gave way to other endings that mark the rupture of our closest ties, those that define ourselves to ourselves. We think we were all rattled here, each somehow knowing something about this, and given the opportunity to share its devastating impact.<\/p>\n

We grappled with these moments of experience, tried to formulate them, share them, integrate them into our shared world of thought and intersubjective theories; we tried to move from “no man’s\u00a0land\u201d into a land we inhabit with others who have been there, who live there beside\u00a0us, whom we may now recognize.<\/p>\n

\"\"Julie was outstanding in her generosity: she tirelessly picked up, held, digested and contained what our participants shared with us. Our team of panelists expanded meanings while also introducing, elaborating and integrating different threads. Cristina Bonucci (Italy), Karla Rodriguez Escenaro (Mexico), Susan Klebanoff (USA), Tony Korner (Australia), Rina Lazar (Israel), Jill Salberg (USA), Sally Swartz (South Africa) and Shomer Zwelling (USA) gave their energy and gifted abilities to rethinking and standing within spaces of shadow, and we so appreciated them for this.<\/p>\n

As always, we move now to preparing for the next colloquium, scheduled to run from November 10 to 21, 2021. The paper will be Dana Amir\u2019s 2019 \u201cThe Malignant Ambiguity of Incestuous Language,\u201d an evocative and timely piece of work that we are sure will stimulate, engage and challenge us all. Joining as panelists for the colloquium will be: Galit Atlas (USA), Adrienne Harris (USA),\u00a0 Peter Maduro (USA), Esther Rapaport (Israel), Uri Hadar (Israel), Simone Drichel (NZ), Alyona Chukanova, (Ukraine), Paul Renn (UK) and Marie Saba (Peru).<\/p>\n
