The Israeli-Hebrew chapter has just completed its annual day-and-a-half 2021 Relational Circles<\/em> conference, held live with 250 eager participants, following two years of not meeting face to face! When we began planning, we were still planning a Zoom conference, but as time (and vaccinations) proceeded, we dared change it to an in-person event, with everyone wearing masks.<\/p>\n

While envisioning the conference, we felt that since external reality had been so dominant lately, our wish was to return inward, to the basics, so we titled it Relational Therapy in Practice<\/em>, attempting to tackle the question of what we actually do while practicing Relational therapy.<\/p>\n

We met Thursday afternoon at the beautiful Kibbutz Shfaim conference center. The conference began with an introduction by Dr. Ilana Laor, the Forum’s head. Ilana highlighted the structure of Relational thought, attempting to contain multiplicity while holding on to a distinct identity. She emphasized the importance of connecting to diverse currents in Israeli society: Religious, Orthodox, Secular and Arabs; and to diverse professional affiliations: group therapists, child therapists, couple and family therapists, art therapists, etc.<\/p>\n

In the plenum circle, we heard two polemical papers by Prof. Aner Govrin and Dr. Ronnie Baht, moderated by Dr. Noga Guggenheim, which dealt with whether Relational clinical theory is a body of knowledge or merely a sensibility. We then divided into 15 circles in order to discuss this theme. We ended the evening with a grand dancing party with live music, and a wonderful psychoanalytic\/musical video clip<\/u><\/a> created by Oren Sol (please click on the hyperlink to enjoy the video).<\/p>\n

The following morning we held two consecutive clinical workshop sessions, of almost two hours each, with the participants partaking in varied workshops of their choice. All in all there were 30 offerings, comprising such themes as: \u201cFollowing the Relational Baby,\u201d \u201cDialogical Intuition,\u201d \u201cThe Ethical Presence of the Relational Therapist,\u201d \u201cRelational Negotiations in Treatment,\u201d \u201cSelf-Disclosure,\u201d \u201cOtherness in Relational Theory,\u201d \u201cRelational Analytic Group Therapy,\u201d \u201cRelational Couples Therapy\u201d and more. The aim was to give the participants, many of them encountering the Relational viewpoint for the first time, a rich and varied taste, and to remind all of us what we mean when talk about Relational therapy. Mission seemed to have been accomplished, with the workshops enabling rich clinical work and discussion.<\/p>\n

After lunch we gathered in the main auditorium for another major treat, a panel entitled \u201cWhere Have I Made a Mistake in the Treatment?\u201d with three Relational therapists of varied seniority: Dr. Momi Beinart, Gili Katz-Ben Sheffer and Dr. Gila Ofer, moderated by Dr. Micha Weiss. The panelists valiantly shared their experiences of what they considered were (not minor) mistakes, two of them in treatments that continued with gained treatment effects eventually, and one painfully aborted as a result of the mistake. All three pointedly refrained from introducing ‘a mistake’ which would then turn into ‘a successful breakthrough in the treatment,’ as so many such accounts get portrayed in our literature. It was touching and educating. There was a sense that we were encountering authentic and deeply personal (yet common) hazards of our trade, leaving all participants with a sober ‘depressive’ sense.<\/p>\n

We wrapped up our experiences with the aid of Dr. Ilana Laor and Yoav Antman, with a contented sense of a rich and nourishing professional and community event.<\/p>\n
