Stavros Charalambides (Greece) suggested opening a Couples, Family and Group Special Interest Group (CFG SIG) to the IARPP board, with the aim to\u00a0serve as an umbrella for\u00a0IARPP members with a practice and\/or theoretical interest regarding relational psychoanalytic ideas on Couples, Families and Groups psychotherapy and psychoanalysis.\u00a0Upon the Board\u2019s approval, Stavros invited Gila Ofer (Israel) and Haim Weinberg (USA) to co-chair the SIG with him, and the forum opened in March 2021.<\/p>\n

As of September, our group includes over 100 IARPP members. So far we have discussed several case vignettes in our forum: A group vignette\u00a0by Ilana Laor (Israel), a couple case by Keri Cohen (USA), a group case by Adam Shechter (USA), and another couple vignette by\u00a0Jana Edwards (USA).<\/p>\n

We intend to continue to post clinical cases of SIG members for discussion, and we encourage members to submit presentations about couples, families and groups\u00a0for the IARPP conference.<\/p>\n

Charalambides, Weinberg and Earl Hopper (UK), members of the SIG, gave a panel in the October IARPP symposium on the topic of\u00a0\u201cgroup process\u201d perspectives on socio-cultural conflict. Hopper discussed mature hope and communication in our response to social conflict and pointed out the shift from remorse to relational reparation. Weinberg used the group analytic perspective and the concept of the Social Unconscious to explain the obstacles\u00a0in overcoming the conflict in the Middle\u00a0East. Charalambides explained the way embodied pain (individual level) connected him with unresolved intergenerational trauma (large group) in the conflict\u00a0between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots.<\/p>\n

While discussing with SIG members how to improve their involvement in our forum discussions, the idea of a Zoom meeting was suggested. We will move forward with this idea in January. The goal is to help Couple, Family and Group members feel more connected and involved. We will probably take up the question of whether to do such meetings more frequently.<\/p>\n
