\"pizercoverimage1116w\"\u201cCatharsis<\/em> and Peripeteia<\/em>: Considering Kearney and the Healing Functions of Narrative,\u201d<\/strong> is in publication for E. Severson, B. Becker, & D. Goodman (eds.), In the Wake of Trauma<\/em><\/strong> (Duquesne University Press, 2016). \u00a0This chapter considers the use of narrative to restore cohesiveness to a post-traumatic fractured state. \u00a0My argument invokes Jerome Bruner\u2019s notion that trauma is a tear or rupture in the expected order (in Aristotelian terms,\u00a0peripeteia<\/em>), a shocking reversal requiring narrative in the\u00a0service of restoration and healing. \u00a0I develop these ideas through a reading of The Odyssey<\/em>, Joyce\u2019s Ulysses<\/em>, and Hamlet<\/em>, and through the clinical story of a woman whose physical scarring yielded, slowly over time, to an emergent narrative of protracted childhood abuse.<\/p>\n
