Relational Psychoanalysis continues to be an evolving field. Forty years ago Stephen Mitchell introduced us to his groundbreaking work on relational thinking. Drawing from British object-relational theory, interpersonal psychoanalysis and feminist theory, he offered us novel ways of thinking and functioning clinically. Further nourished by significant contributions from  anthropology, sociology, philosophy, political science, infant research, attachment studies, gender studies and the neurosciences, among others, Relational Psychoanalysis continues to develop in exciting ways. As we confront the intrinsic impact of the sociopolitical on our psychic lives, how we think and work clinically has shifted to encompass the significant and inevitable meeting and recognizing the “other” both externally and internally.

At the 19th IARPP annual conference that will be held in Valencia June 15-18, 2023, we will explore how our clinical encounters are not only enriched by, but are intricately interwoven with implicit and explicit influences from an array of different areas of knowledge. Maintaining an ongoing dialogue with different disciplines that also seek to explore and understand human experience is essential.

Our clinical endeavours are ever more fraught given our current global challenges where an ongoing pandemic, war, and climate change threaten our existential and interpersonal lives dramatically. Dialogue and striving towards mutual recognition is more pressing than ever as our world right now feels more polarized in unprecedented ways.

Holding complexity, disrupting reductionism, enhancing our emotional awareness and connection – these are our tasks clinically as we aim to find our way forward together. Mindful exchanges with different ways of exploring human experience becomes indispensable in these very endeavours.
