Erotic Transferences: A Contemporary Introduction

Book Announcement by Andrea Celenza (USA)

Celenza, A. (2025). Erotic transferences: A Contemporary introduction. Routledge.

Erotic Transferences: A Contemporary Introduction is part of a new series by Routledge that offers concise introductions dedicated to influential concepts, theories, leading figures, and techniques in psychoanalysis, characterized by “clarity, accessibility, and depth.” Here Andrea Celenza offers a comprehensive introduction to this key yet challenging aspect of the psychoanalytic process. Celenza highlights the sparseness of literature on erotic transferences and a tendency to desexualize psychoanalytic theorizing. Positing that this results from the inherent threat erotic transferences can pose to the analyst, she seeks to redress the omission. She offers a thorough overview of the topic, clarifies terminology, and provides vivid case examples and the tools to deal with the intense feelings that inevitably arise with erotic transferences. Throughout the volume, Celenza discusses the interplay of power and gender, along with chapters on the temptation of disclosure and the disturbing prevalence of sexual boundary violations.
