Lebolt, J. (2024, May). Clinical Practice with LGBTQ+ Patients: An Intersubjective/Relational Approach. Presented at the Greater Washington Society for Clinical Social Work via Zoom.
In this interactive workshop, I clarified the meaning of “LGBTQ+” and key concepts from relational and intersubjective theory. Using a relational/intersubjective framework that incorporates an improvisational approach to treatment, I addressed how we may work more effectively with patients with a different gender identity or sexual orientation from our own. I then presented a case of a transgender, gay male patient, whom I see five times weekly and in group therapy, in which I demonstrated how my use of self in the relationship led to growth and an increased sense of agency.
