This article compares two clinical cases depicting varying types of telepathic transmission. De Peyer illustrates differing reactions that can be triggered in the same analyst, depending on the nature and circumstance of the anomalous communication. The first case illustrates a series of uncanny transmissions culminating in a telepathic dream of the patient’s, which depicts, in detail, a medical emergency that transpired in the analyst’s home. De Peyer describes the sense of boundarylessness that this dream produced, as if the patient were “trespassing in her mind.” This is contrasted with a second case in which when asked by the patient to come up with a name to call her lover, de Peyer spontaneously chooses a name that has tremendous symbolic meaning to the patient, unlocking otherwise inaccessible developmental material. De Peyer illustrates ways that anomalous transmissions generate varied reactions in the analyst, yet can often serve as “portals” leading to positive clinical transformation.
