Letter from President
Dear IARPP Members,
A couple of weeks ago, we had the chance to enjoy the second of our two annual colloquiums, which this time revolved around Peter Shabad’s (USA) paper, “Owing and Being Owed: Shame and Responsibility toward the Other.” In it, the author explored “how in the aftermath of relational disruptions to giving of oneself and being received, shame inverts the passionate movement of responsibility toward and for others into an enclosed self-focused preoccupation.”
The rich debate that unfolded during the two weeks of the colloquium was guided – as has been the case for the last years – by Cathy Hicks (Australia) and Shlomit Gadot (Israel), who are now concluding their roles as Online Colloquium Co-Chairs. We would like to express our gratitude to them for carefully selecting presenters and papers, and for always being attentive to different sensibilities. We deeply appreciate the enormous effort they have put into this work.
Regarding our annual conference, we are currently working on the program, after receiving more than 200 proposals. As you all know, this year we will be meeting in Toronto, Canada, May 7–10, 2026, under the theme, Can Hate Last? Reclaiming Clinical Sensibilities in Relational Psychoanalysis, which we believe will be an excellent opportunity to reflect together about such a necessary topic in today’s world.
My best wishes for 2026, hoping that we can continue to meet and share in our online gatherings, and hopefully also in person in Toronto.
With warm regards,
Sandra Toribio Caballero
