Eligibility Requirements
Psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, academics, journalists, independent scholars and intellectuals who meet the specific eligibility requirements as outlined below.
During the Fellowship Year, applicants must be training or working in the country in which the annual IARPP conference will be held.
NB: Psychoanalysts and Psychoanalytic Candidates are not eligible for the Fellowship because of their ready access to mentors, analytic colleagues, and scientific activities at local and national levels.
All Applicants should:
• have demonstrated leadership ability in their discipline,
• have special aptitude in research, teaching, artistic, writing and/or clinical endeavors,
• have special interest in psychodynamics, psychoanalysis, a psychoanalytic approach to mind, culture, and scholarship, severally or in combination.
Applicants need not be planning to become psychoanalysts.
What are the specific eligibility requirements?
IARPP has established the Muriel Dimen Fellowship as a way to reach out to those both within and outside the academic and clinical fields of psychoanalysis who are interested in working with psychoanalysis in expanded, perhaps unconventional, ways. The goal is to promote interchange between IARPP and a wider community: in addition to scholars and clinicians within the more familiar fields, we are open to those whose talents might exceed conventional academic categories, a person who makes a difference that reflects IARPP’s commitment to the cultural, historical, and linguistic contextualization of intellectual and clinical practice.
While it seems important to specify the level of education and thought that suit a Fellowship of this caliber, we emphasize that it’s the person and their ideas, more than the degree, that matter to us. We recognize, as well, that requirements for full participation in a discipline vary according to country and geographical region.
1. Psychology Applicants must at the time of the Fellowship either hold the highest customary degree or be studying towards it. They should either have training, leadership, or research responsibilities, or have shown aptitude for these. Holding at least a half-time position with an academic department or clinical training program will be one way the applicant may demonstrate such qualities. Those still in graduate school must have completed required coursework and be in or beyond the predoctoral internship.
2. Social Work Applicants must at the time of the Fellowship have an M.S.W., D.S.W. or Ph.D. The applicant’s interest in psychoanalysis will be evident from their work – in an academic appointment or in a position in training, leadership, public policy, or research, or in an interdisciplinary position (at least part-time).
3. Psychiatry Applicants must at the time of application be in full- or part-time practice, and also be engaged in writing, teaching, or research as evidenced by academic appointment or writing.
4. Academic, Multidisciplinary, and Other Medical Applicants may be from academia or non-mental health professions; e.g., the humanities and social sciences; neuroscience, medicine, law, theology, journalism and the arts. Their work should demonstrate a serious ongoing interest in clinical and theoretical psychoanalysis and its relationship to their primary field. Applicants must currently work in a position that influences others through education, writing, public speaking, research organizational leadership, performance and/or artistic installations.
