A patient puts to his psychologist a question: “Where do you come from, Laura?” In El Dolor es Sordo (Pain is Deaf), a 2018 book published by Editorial Academica Espanola, Laura Molet Estaper seeks to formulate an answer by understanding both the therapist’s and the patient’s pain and suffering. When pain comes out, it ceases to be deaf, invisible and mute. It is given place and social recognition, allowing those who suffer to feel worthy.
The anger one feels when facing a relationship of abuse; the terror and suffering that a disease as hard as cancer brings: one must never surrender. Molet Estaper argues for acceptance of mental pain and validation of the body’s experience. A scar condenses the memory of the damage suffered, but it also represents the renewed possibility of authenticity. An ode to courage, a contagious courage that crosses fear and pain by facing truth, the book makes a case that we must tolerate and support both our own as well as our patients’ suffering in order to transform it.
Donna Orange wrote, “This text is a gift to every therapist and every sufferer.”
