Background Objects, Babies and Breathing

Publication Announcement by Adam Schechter (USA)

(2023). The Midwest Quarterly. 64(2): 169-176.

Grotstein’s (1980) background object and Eigen’s (2009, 2016) interpretation of the term are used as a springboard to explore a psychoanalytically-aware parenting. Moment-to-moment descriptions of father and baby interactions are provided, considering both psychic and external reality. The fathering experience is contemplated through a number of psychoanalytic conceptualizations with an emphasis on the phenomenological as a mode of ongoing research and practice. An applied experience of the background object is developed, suggesting that a creative perspective on fathering contains therapeutic potentialities.
