Tolerance can be defined as the acceptance of another person, another viewpoint, or another behavior that is different from our own. It is the appreciation of diversity and the ability to live and let others live. Tolerance is supposed to be the remedy to discrimination, dehumanization, repression, and violence. But how far can tolerance go? Should we tolerate cultural traditions and rituals that seem to us repressing and against human rights? Or should tolerate “conscientious persecutors” who believe that they hold the truth because we should respect freedom of conscience by itself? In this chapter, I establish a circumplex model of tolerance, based on my experience in therapy groups and drawing conclusions to large social groups. In addition, I analyze the current world political/social situation, especially in the USA, to understand how polarization and intolerance govern the scene almost everywhere nowadays.
