Dances of Intimacy: The Nuts and Bolts of Couple Therapy

Presentation Announcement by Claire Beth Steinberger (USA)

(2022). National Psychological Association for Psychoanalysis, January 8, online.

This online couples workshop introduces a psychoanalytically-oriented approach to couple therapy, comparing individual (bi-personal field) with couple (tri-personal field) models, and exploring the role of the analyst as a participant-observer and significant “third.” Clinical intervention integrates classical, object relations and relational models with contemporary research on childhood trauma, the multigenerational transmission process and the impact of sociocultural (e.g., race, gender, class, age) constructions on the treatment model. The workshop highlights the “location” of the analyst as well as the impact of the bio-social-emotional matrix, where an unwieldly pandemic implicates growth opportunity for an isolated young Black couple confronting unresolved trauma narratives.
