Buechler, S. (2024). Erich Fromm: A Contemporary Introduction. Routledge.

This introduction to the work of Erich Fromm focuses on his multi-disciplinary career. Fromm’s contributions spanned sociology, politics, psychoanalysis, and philosophy. He was an ardent activist, social critic, public intellectual, and prolific author. His influence was enormous, both within and outside academia. Many of his volumes sold millions of books. Internationally, he inspired a generation of scholars and clinicians. It will be argued that his cogent, passionate, humanistic approach has tremendous contemporary relevance. Fromm integrated his views about individual growth with his passionate focus on social and cultural issues.

Reading Fromm can contribute to the clinician’s stamina and help us tolerate the inevitable difficulty of the work, and the confusion and doubt that can especially plague the beginning therapist. Fromm can facilitate our feeling a sense of mission about our work, a feeling that we are fighting on behalf of life itself, a sensation of being centered and whole. Erich Fromm: A Contemporary Introduction offers a personal statement of Sandra Buechler’s own “relationship” to Fromm’s thinking, as it has influenced her in her clinical activities and personal life.
