Publication Announcement by Noga Guggenheim (Israel)
Guggenheim, N. (2025). Karen Horney’s Self-Analysis: A personal journey. American Journal of Psychoanalysis, 85 (4).
This paper, published as part of the American Journal of Psychoanalysis’ second Special Issue, “Changing Theoretical and Clinical Issues,” in commemoration of the journal’s 85th anniversary, describes the author’s experience reading Horney’s (1942) Self-Analysis which, when published more than 80 years ago, was innovative in introducing a path of self-help that has largely remained unexplored. Even today, it might still be considered controversial among the various psychoanalytic and psychotherapeutic perspectives. After presenting some background on Horney, Guggenheim describes Horney’s principal ideas on self-analysis, how her book was reviewed, and its relevance to current psychotherapeutic practice. The paper concludes with a clinical vignette and a personal reflection.
