Responsibility and Radical Hope as Connecting and Creating Meaning

Presentation Announcement by Shir Shanun (USA)

Shanun, S. (2025, October). Responsibility and radical hope as connecting and creating meaning. The 46th International Association for Psychoanalytic Self Psychology, Pasadena, California.

In an atmosphere of othering, concepts of meaning and understanding become unimaginable. I argue that radical hope and commitment to responsibility support our experiences of intimate connection in the face of otherness. Jonathan Lear’s Radical Hope is a creative act of imagining unknown possibilities we cannot yet grasp when concepts for thinking collapse. The emergence of radical hope is supported by Sartre’s concepts of commitment and responsibility. Field theory will help us elaborate this thesis.
