Book Announcement by Fabio Monguzzi (Italy)
The purpose of Talking with Couples: Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy of the Couple Relationship (The Harris Meltzer Trust: Karnac Books, 2015) is to provide the reader with a view of psychoanalytic work with couples, describing theoretical points, goals, and therapeutic techniques using lots of clinical examples. The first two chapters demonstrate the theoretical basis of clinical work with couples. The second part of the book, chapters three, four and five, illustrate therapeutic techniques in the treatment of couples, using the proposition that “the patient is the relationship” as theorized by Stanley Ruszczynski, James Fisher, and Cristopher Clulow of the Tavistock Clinic, as well as Ronald Britton’s concept of triangular space. Chapter five, written by Fabio Monguzzi, introduces the relational-intersubjective perspective as applied to psychoanalytic psychotherapy with couples. This approach emphasizes the personal involevment of the therapist in the here and now of the session, the role of affective regulation, and the use of the therapeutic relationship as a mutative factor.
