picture of Irish Hunger MemorialIrish Hunger Memorial

The Irish Hunger Memorial is a striking 1/4 acre plot of land resembling a beautiful Irish field set among the lower Manhattan skyscrapers, jutting out from the sidewalk at Vesey Street and North End Avenue.

The sloping field looks out over the Hudson from a twenty-five foot pedestal of fossilized Kilkenny limestone and glass, and is dedicated to raising awareness of “The Great Hunger” that is. the Great Irish Famine of 1845-1852 that left one million dead and another million and a half uprooted. The Great Hunger was the catalyst for the first major wave of Irish emigration to the United States. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ussnei/NYChungerMeml.htm

Here are 2 of my favorite things to show visitors to Manhattan.

picture of whispering gallery

6 minute walk from Roosevelt Hotel to Grand Central Terminal (GCT) and the whispering corner, in front of the Oyster Bar:

Here at this arched entry way if you and a friend stand caddy corner across the passageway, face into the corner & speak quietly - your friend will be able to hear you across the way - when listening it helps to put one ear into the corner - It is Grand Central Station so there's usually a lot of ambient noise. There are also many places to eat at GCT and of course lot's of people watching!

And here are some more secrets in GCT

picture of 30 rock lobby12 minute walk from the Roosevelt Hotel to 30 Rockefeller Center to view the lobby's ceiling painting, sure there are good stories about the mural behind the reception desk but my favorite is the ceiling painting.

Walk into the lobby at 30 Rockefeller Center (facing the ice skating rink) about 15 or 20 paces & stand to the far right or left. Look up at the man painted on the ceiling. He looks like he's leaning away from you. Now walk to the other side of the lobby & look at the man - he's still leaning away from you!
