Chapters Committee
Throughout the latter part of 2025 and the beginning of 2026, Hilary Offman (Canada) and Berta Loret de Mola (Mexico) of the Chapters Committee conducted a series of individual interviews with the chairs of various international chapters. The primary objectives were to strengthen the sense of international community, understand local realities, and facilitate member participation in global events, such as the upcoming Toronto conference.
Common Challenges and Technological Solutions: Through meetings with chapters in Buenos Aires, Mexico, Greece, and Ukraine, two recurring obstacles were identified: language barriers and economic limitations. Many members expressed difficulty participating in English-language events. To address this, the committee has proposed the intensive use of technological tools, such as automatic Zoom subtitles and AI-driven translation, to democratize access to knowledge.
Resilience and Relational Theory in Crisis Contexts: The work with chapters in conflict zones has been particularly significant:
- Ukraine and Israel: Relational theory has been highlighted as fundamental for addressing war trauma and dissociation. In Israel, support groups have successfully fostered collaboration between Arab and Jewish communities. In Ukraine, despite significant logistical and safety hurdles, members are being encouraged and supported to present their work at the international conference.
- Iran: There is a burgeoning interest in relational psychoanalysis as a vital framework for finding meaning during times of social and political transition.
Growth and Academic Projects: In Europe, the Romanian chapter is focused on translating relational authors and studying the impact of historical trauma on national self-esteem.
Boosting Participation in Mexico and Argentina: Chapters in Mexico (Contemporary Mexico and IARPP Mexico) and Buenos Aires have demonstrated a strong commitment to a relational perspective through programs and study groups. There are plans to organize Spanish-language webinars and invite distinguished IARPP figures to speak on the history and purpose of our global community to motivate international affiliation.
This coordination effort serves not only to address administrative needs but to build a human bridge that allows regional voices to enrich the global relational psychoanalytic dialogue.
