Heart Wisdom cover

The early years of parenthood bring joy and excitement, but also exhaustion, frustration, and moments of feeling pushed to the breaking point. Facing such emotional extremes, parents often seek a way out of crisis, but what they truly need is a way through it. In Heart Wisdom: A Psychological Journey into the Early Years of Parenthood (Free Association Publishing), Dr. Shir Bar-Emet Gradman takes a path rarely traveled: While psychoanalysis has long used the parent–child relationship to illuminate the child’s inner world, she turns that lens around, onto parents themselves. Drawing on contemporary psychoanalytic thought (Winnicott, Klein, Ogden) alongside key developmental research (Beebe & Lachmann, Tronick, Stern), Bar-Emet Gradman reframes early parenthood as a site of psychic transformation in the adult, offering parents, and the clinicians who work with them, a deeper language for ambivalence, collapse, confusion, and repair as part of growth.
