It is our pleasure to report back on our most recent colloquium offering: Julie Gerhardt’s 2020 paper, “The Traumatic No Man’s Land of Psychic Devastation: Beyond Mourning and Melancholia” (Psychoanalytic Perspectives, 17:1, 84-106).

Each colloquium develops its own unique course, tone, coloring and pace. This one was rooted in deep sorrow and held a gravity that clearly set it apart from daily, run-of-the-mill routine. Its entry point was the moment of death, when things as we know them change. After such moments we rarely join the regular course of time as we left it. We are marked, scarred, transformed, sometimes larger than we were before, sometimes depleted.

Julie invited us to pause at this very moment when all changes. She guided us to challenge the known signifiers of grief, mourning and melancholia, to reveal what they simultaneously refer to and cover up. We thank her for this nudge beyond known significations, back into the rawness of feeling, the bewildered states of emotion, the experienced inability to draw meaning from loss. We appreciated the contributions of all those who tentatively, bravely shared their moments with us, through their personal and analytic encounters with them.

At some point death gave way to other endings that mark the rupture of our closest ties, those that define ourselves to ourselves. We think we were all rattled here, each somehow knowing something about this, and given the opportunity to share its devastating impact.

We grappled with these moments of experience, tried to formulate them, share them, integrate them into our shared world of thought and intersubjective theories; we tried to move from “no man’s land” into a land we inhabit with others who have been there, who live there beside us, whom we may now recognize.

Julie was outstanding in her generosity: she tirelessly picked up, held, digested and contained what our participants shared with us. Our team of panelists expanded meanings while also introducing, elaborating and integrating different threads. Cristina Bonucci (Italy), Karla Rodriguez Escenaro (Mexico), Susan Klebanoff (USA), Tony Korner (Australia), Rina Lazar (Israel), Jill Salberg (USA), Sally Swartz (South Africa) and Shomer Zwelling (USA) gave their energy and gifted abilities to rethinking and standing within spaces of shadow, and we so appreciated them for this.

As always, we move now to preparing for the next colloquium, scheduled to run from November 10 to 21, 2021. The paper will be Dana Amir’s 2019 “The Malignant Ambiguity of Incestuous Language,” an evocative and timely piece of work that we are sure will stimulate, engage and challenge us all. Joining as panelists for the colloquium will be: Galit Atlas (USA), Adrienne Harris (USA),  Peter Maduro (USA), Esther Rapaport (Israel), Uri Hadar (Israel), Simone Drichel (NZ), Alyona Chukanova, (Ukraine), Paul Renn (UK) and Marie Saba (Peru).

We send our best wishes to everyone and look forward to our time together again later in the year.

רצינו לשתף בקצרה על הקולוקוויום האחרון שלנו שעסק במאמרה של ג’ולי גרהרדט:
“The Traumatic No Man’s Land of Psychic Devastation: Beyond Mourning and Melancholia” (Psychoanalytic Perspectives, 17:1, 84-106).

כל קולוקוויום מפתח מהלך, קצב וצבע ייחודיים. האחרון היה נטוע בצער עמוק וניכרו בו כובד ועצב שהבחינו אותו מדיונים תיאורטיים שגרתיים. הוא עסק ברגע הפרידה הסופי שהמוות מחולל, בעת שהחיים כפי שהכרנו אותם משתנים ללא הכר. לאחר רגעים אלה אנחנו רק לעיתים נדירות חוברים למהלכו של הזמן במקום בו נפרדנו ממנו.  אנחנו ממשיכים את חיינו שונים, מצולקים; לעיתים גדולים מכפי שהיינו, ולעיתים מרוקנים.

ג’ולי הזמינה אותנו לעצור ברגע הטרנספורמטיבי הזה, שלאחריו הכול משתנה. היא הובילה אותנו לאתגר את המסמנים השגורים לצער, אבל ומלנכוליה, ולחשוף את מה שהם בו-בזמן מגלים ומסווים. אנחנו מודים לה על ההזדמנות להלך על גבולות השפה והרגש הגולמי אל אותם מצבי תדהמה ויגון שלא מאפשרים לנו לבנות משמעויות מתוך האובדן. הערכתנו נתונה למי ששיתפו באומץ רגעים מעין אלה בהתנסויותיהם האישיות והקליניות.

הקולוקוויום  נגע גם בחיתוכים שנגרמים לא בשל המוות. סופים שקוטעים את קשרינו הקרובים ביותר, ומערערים את הגדרתינו את עצמנו. נדמה שכל המשתתפים ידעו משהו על סופים כאלה, ונוצרה הזדמנות לשתף ולהשתתף באימפקט המטלטל והמערער שלהם.

התמודדנו עם הניסיון לנסח חוויות כאלה, לחלוק אותן ולפנות להם מרחב בחשיבה האנטרסובייקטיבית המשותפת לנו. ניסינו לנוע מ-
“no man’s land”
אל ארץ בה ניתן לדור עם אחרים שיודעים אותה, ולתת הכרה למי שחי בה חלקים מחייו, לצידנו.

ג’ולי עוררה התפעלות והערכה ביכולת שלה להרים כל תרומה ומחשבה של המשתתפים, להכיל ולהתייחס באופן אישי לחוויות ומחשבות. אנחנו מודים לה ולצוות הפנליסטים שהרחיבו משמעויות, והוסיפו חוטי מחשבה מורכבים ועשירים לרקמה של המפגש.
תודתנו לקריסטינה בוצ’י (איטליה), קרלה רודריגז אסקנרו (מקסיקו), סוזן קלבנאך (ארה”ב), טוני קורנר (אוסטרליה) , רינה לזר (ישראל), ג’יל סלברג (ארה”ב), סאלי שוורץ (דרום אפריקה) ושומר זווליג (ארה”ב) שתרמו מזמנם, וממשאבי הרגש, הכישרון והתבונה שלהם בעת שעמדנו במרווחים בין אור וצל.
