A Revolutionary Call About Female Sexuality

By Doris Silverman (USA)

Doris Silverman (USA) recently published her chapter, “A Revolutionary Call About Female Sexuality,” in A Womb of Her Own: Women’s Struggle for Sexual and Reproductive Autonomy, edited by Ellen Toronto, JoAnn Ponder, Kristin Davisson, and Maurine Kelber Kelly (Routledge, 2017).  In the embattled period of feminist concerns during the 60s and 70s, Cixous, a French feminist, called for a revolution. Now, four decades later, this paper deals with how far we have fared in this calling. I address many forward advances, as well as some serious limitations that still exist. To explicate this theme I address features found in different forms of social media, permanent body adornment in the form of tattooing, as well as private and public forms of sexual exchanges (sexting and hooking up). The question, “can women have it all?”–meaning work, marriage, and child-rearing–continues to challenge feminist thinking and behavior. I address two recognized public personas with different positions on this topic.
