Further Developments in Interpersonal Psychoanalysis, 1980s-2010s: Emerging Interest in the Analyst’s Subjectivity

By Donnel Stern (USA) and Irwin Hirsch (USA)

Our new co-edited book, Further Developments in Interpersonal Psychoanalysis, 1980s-2010s: Emerging Interest in the Analyst’s Subjectivity, has just been published by Routledge (2018) in the “Psychoanalysis in a New Key” book series.  This book is the second of a two-volume collection of articles written by second- and third-generation interpersonalists.  Its predecessor, also co-edited by us, appeared about a year ago:  The Interpersonal Perspective in Psychoanalysis, 1960s-1990s: Rethinking Transference and Countertransference.  Each article in these two books is preceded by a brief prologue that situates the article that follows in its historical context and tells the reader a little about the author.  Each volume also contains an introduction: by Hirsch in the new volume, by Stern in the first volume.

Our purpose in presenting these books is to provide a resource for interpersonalists, and to introduce interpersonal psychoanalysis to those who might be interested but have never studied it.  It is very difficult to find your way through a psychoanalytic literature that is not your own.  We hope that, if you are already familiar with this literature, we will remind you of some old friends—and, if you are new to interpersonal psychoanalysis, we hope we make the exploration of this literature easier than it would otherwise be.

In the context of these new books, we also want to draw your attention to a third book with the same format, each paper accompanied by a contextualizing prologue:  Pioneers of Interpersonal Psychoanalysis was published in 1995 and co-edited by Stern, Mann, Kantor, and Schlesinger.  It remains in print.  The papers it collects are by the first generation of interpersonalists.  Together, the three books introduce classic articles from each era of interpersonal psychoanalytic history.
