By Knuth Müller (Germany)
Knuth Müller recently published his new book, Im Auftrag der Firma. Geschichte und Folgen einer unerwarteten Liaison zwischen Psychoanalyse und militärisch-nachrichtendienstlichen Netzwerken der USA seit 1940, Vol. I & II (On Behalf of the Agency. History and Consequences of an Unexpected Liaison between Psychoanalysis and the US-Military-Intelligence-Complex since 1940).
The study tries to apply a fundamental psychoanalytic principle to its own history: making the unconscious conscious. Up to now, no historical overview of the collaboration between organized psychoanalysis and the US-American military-scientific complex since 1940 has been published. This study, published in November 2017 (Psychosozial-Verlag), tries to elaborate on the questions of when and how this collaboration came about, who were the key protagonists, what role did they play within the US-American “Military-Intelligence Community,” in what kind of “mindset” did this co-operation evolve, and what consequences arose from it—especially in view of the so-called “Global War on Terror” and the historical role psychoanalysis and psychoanalysts played in shaping the notorious CIA “Enhanced Interrogation Techniques” (EITs). As of today, this chapter of psychoanalytic history has been largely ignored by the psychoanalytic community even though most of the documents mentioned in this study have been readily available to the general public since at least 1979.
