“Collateral Damage in the Battle to Change Sexual Orientation”

In: Feit, A. & Slomowitz, A. (2019) Homosexuality, Transsexuality, Psychoanalysis, and Traditional Judaism. New York: Routledge, 33-44.

Blechner highlights the dangers of societal, cultural, and religious oppressiveness, especially with regard to sexuality. In this chapter he argues that attempts to convert homosexuals to heterosexuals must be considered in light of the collateral damage that they cause. The individual, the family, and the community all needlessly suffer. An extended clinical case of an Orthodox Jewish man is presented as an illustration of the destruction wrought by the misguided attempt to deny and alter a man’s sexual orientation.

“Erotic Transference and Countertransference”

American Psychoanalytic Association Annual Meeting. New York, NY, February 13, 2020.

To create a forum for the exploration of erotic transference and countertransference, Mark J. Blechner will present a case involving borderline dynamics, sadomasochism, and sexual fantasy material. Diana Diamond will consider the case material from the vantage point of level of personality organization, focusing on how attention to the erotic transference and countertransference may catalyze a shift from sadomasochistic to oedipal dynamics. Lissa Weinstein will consider the case material from the vantage point of self-disclosure in psychoanalytic treatment.
