Marie Saba has translated Daniel Shaw’s popular 2014 book, Traumatic Narcissism: Relational Systems of Subjugation, into Spanish for Routledge’s Relational Perspectives Books Series.
In this book, Daniel Shaw presents a way of understanding the traumatic impact of narcissism as it is engendered developmentally, and as it is enacted relationally. Focusing on the dynamics of narcissism in interpersonal relations, Shaw describes the relational system of what he terms the “traumatizing narcissist” as a system of subjugation – the objectification of one person in a relationship as the means of enforcing the dominance of the subjectivity of the other. He illustrates the workings of this relational system of subjugation in a variety of contexts: theorizing traumatic narcissism as an intergenerationally transmitted relational/developmental trauma; and exploring the clinician’s experience working with the adult children of traumatizing narcissists. He explores the relationship of cult leaders and their followers, and examines how traumatic narcissism has lingered vestigially in some aspects of the psychoanalytic profession.

Narcisismo Traumático: Sistemas Relacionales de Subyugación
En Narcisismo traumático: Sistemas relacionales de subyugación, Daniel Shaw presenta una forma de entender cómo el narcisismo se engendra en el desarrollo y cómo su impacto se escenifica relacionalmente. Centrándose en las dinámicas narcisistas en las relaciones interpersonales, Shaw describe el sistema relacional de lo que él denomina el ‘narcisista traumatizante’ como un sistema de subyugación: la cosificación de una persona en una relación como una imponer el dominio de la subjetividad del otro. Daniel Shaw ilustra el funcionamiento de este sistema relacional de subyugación en una variedad de contextos, teoriza el narcisismo traumático como un trauma relacional/de desarrollo transmitido intergeneracionalmente y explora su trabajo como clínico con los hijos ya adultos de narcisistas traumatizantes. Marie Saba, clinical psychologist, masters in psychoanalysis (Sheffield University), works in private practice in Lima. Founding president of IARPP Peruvian Chapter, she coordinates the IARPP-Perú study group which has met weekly since 2016. Director of Tarinakuy, IARPP-Perú’s social project; Director of the publishing house Espacio Gradiva, specializing in mental health books. She has been in charge of the translation of several books, including relational publications such as The Enigma of Desire (Atlas) and Reconocimiento Mutuo (Benjamin). She co-edited El Niño en Silencio with Jean Magagna (Karnac, 2014).
Daniel Shaw, LCSW has, as of this writing, sold more than 7,000 copies of Traumatic Narcissism: Relational Systems of Subjugation in its English language format worldwide. He is currently at work on his next book, continuing to explore the ways that highly narcissistic people, groups and governments cause traumatic harm to others. Shaw is a former moderator, with Bruce Reis, of the IARPP Online Colloquia and has been an IARPP member since its inception. Shaw is on faculty and is a clinical supervisor at The National Institute for the Psychotherapies in New York City.
