Early 2019 progress note:
We launched the IARPP collective last year with the hope of creating a center and a resource for those of us interested in thinking about the relationships between the social and the individual subject – as a theoretical matter, a clinical dilemma, and a political question for us as individuals and as a discipline. A discipline, whether you call it psychoanalysis or psychology or psychotherapy, that is dedicated to making people’s lives better. To what extent this demands social thinking, social awareness, social action – social, political, historical, economic . . . this question was to be our purpose. Or at least one of them. We hoped for our group to engage in a truly collective effort. It has always been true, and remains so these days, that what happens on the collective, social and political levels demands our attention, both as thinkers and as clinicians.
We have had quite a few discussions this past year, some brief, some longer. One discussion was extended and intense. It centered on the possibility that the collective would engage in a joint effort to create a presentation for the upcoming IARPP conference in Tel Aviv. The unfolding of this discussion, and our entire exchange, is available to those who are signed up to IARPPCollective. If you are not already a part of this project and are interested in joining us, we welcome your participation. (Instructions on how to sign up, via the IARPP website, are below.)
We are still searching for our way, trying to understand and explore what is a collective, and a collective process, that could make sense and work with a relational psychoanalytic perspective, and within a psychoanalytic organization that is of multiple sensibilities and languages and identifications and positions. Join us.
