Raising Children Cross-Culturally

Chapter Announcement by Hemda Arad (USA)

Hemda Arad recently published a chapter in Psychoanalytic Reflections on Parenting Teens and Young Adults: Changing Patterns in Modern Love, Loss, and Longing, edited by Anne Adelman (Routledge, 2018).

The chapter explores the topic of raising children cross-culturally and how psychoanalytic thought and practice contribute to the understanding of this phenomenon, delving into the particular challenges and joys of that experience.  As Arad writes, “Children who grow up cross-culturally must develop the capacity to translate others, all the while having to live fully in both cultures.”  She highlights various facets of the cross-cultural experience through clinical illustrations of her work with immigrants and children of immigrants.
