This semester the Chilean Chapter, in accordance with its bylaws, called its General Assembly to elect a new Board. Of the seven members of the previous Board, five decided not to continue, and one couldn’t because he had already served the two consecutive terms allowed by our bylaws. This speaks of the toll the pandemic and the social unrest took on our Board members. They needed to take a rest due to the hard work that serving on the Board demanded this year, coupled with the exhausting task of continuing seeing patients online.
It also signals the aliveness of the democratic process in our organization and the solidity of its institution. There are no problems in the continuity of the tasks to be undertaken, as the members of the previous Board are all willfully committed to assisting the new elected members. Most of the new Board is very young. They represent the aliveness of the Chilean Chapter and the renewal our members think necessary to maintain the vitality and innovation in our group.
The new Board is constituted by four directors, Solange Coddou, Catalina Barriga, Natalia Hancke, and Edgardo Thumala; the Secretary, Claudia Martin; the Treasurer, María Inés Aliaga; and the President, Juan Francisco Jordan.
This semester the previous Board organized a series of short online seminars of no more than four sessions. Until now we´ve held three: “Mindfulness,” a theoretical experiential workshop; “Intervention with Parents in the Treatment of Infants and Adolescents”; and “Introduction to the Clinic of Infancy.” IARPP-Chile has also sponsored an online course on “Perennial Philosophy” organized by chapter members. The reception of all these courses has been very positive.
Our Chapter was invited to participate in two Zoom meetings with other psychoanalytic institutions of Santiago (ICHPA, NEL, APCH and APSAN). The first was “Psychoanalysis in Time of Crisis,” for which Victor Doñas, Luz María Parada and Andrea Rihm represented IARPP-Chile. The second dialogue, with the same institutions, was a discussion of “The Relevance of Freud´s Civilization and its Discontents Today.” In this latter dialogue, Victor Doñas and Jaime Landa represented us. It is worth pointing out that the pandemic has also brought some unexpected positive effects as this one: the coming together of the different psychoanalytic schools that dwell in our community in a fruitful and respectful dialogue.
Recently, on October 25, our nation held a plebiscite to ask the people if they wanted a new constitution and, if so, the means by which to achieve it: either a Mixed Convention, constituted by members of Congress and representatives from the community, or a Constituent Convention, constituted only by those representing the differing sensibilities and needs of the communities which, on October 25 of last year, exactly one year before the plebiscite, had assembled 1,200,000 citizens strong to manifest for the restitution of human dignity to the people. Eighty percent of the people voted for a new constitution and a Constituent Convention without members of Congress.
The conflict our society has to sort out is well expressed in the picture below.
The aspirations of a new constitution in which all can be represented, drafted from the bottom up, with gender parity and with the inclusion of the original people, as symbolized by the woman with a Chilean and Mapuche flag in each of her hands, her vulnerable nakedness wrapped by the new constitution to come. Hope for future generations may be represented by the child over her shoulder. The image is posted over the graffiti, which express the diversity and massiveness of the protest. The other side of the conflict is seen here as well: the policemen who have acted brutally, repressing and violating the human rights of the citizens.
Our chapter has organized meetings of its members to share and understand from the point of view of relational psychoanalysis the political events that have shaken the basis of our social organization. These meetings were reported in the previous Bulletin edition. We will continue organizing meetings to share and understand what are the psychic implications of a constitution, which for the first time will be built from the bottom. It will be a hard road to travel, and we want to travel this journey with our fellow citizens.

Este semestre en acuerdo con sus Estatutos, el capítulo IARPP Chile celebró su Asamblea General ordinaria en la cual correspondía elegir al Directorio por el período correspondiente de 2 años. De 7 miembros del Directorio anterior 5 decidieron no continuar y uno no podía hacerlo debido a haber cumplido 2 períodos y ya no poder reelegirse de acuerdo también a nuestros estatutos. Esto habla del costo que la pandemia y el estallido social cobro a los miembros del Directorio. Necesitaban tomar un descanso debido al duro trabajo demandado por el Directorio en el contexto de incertidumbre asociado a la situación socio-política y la salud pública . Esto junto con la extenuante tarea de continuar con los tratamientos online. Por otro lado apunta a la vitalidad y solidez del proceso democrático en nuestra institución. No hay un problema en la continuidad de las tareas a realizar toda vez que los miembros salientes del Directorio se ofrecieron con voluntad y compromiso a asistir y acompañar a los nuevos miembros. La mayoría de los nuevos miembros electos son jóvenes. Representas la vitalidad de nuestro capítulo y la renovación que el grupo estima necesaria para mantener la innovación y vivacidad en nuestro grupo.
El nuevo Directorio estás constituido por 4 directores: Solange Coddou, Catalina Barriga, Natalia Hanckes y Edgardo Thumalo más la Secretaria, Claudia Martin; la Tesorera María Inés Aliaga; y el Presidente, Juan Francisco Jordán.
Durante este semestre el Directorio anterior organizó una serie de seminarios cortos, de no más de 4 sesiones. Hasta el momento se han realizado tres de ellos. “Mindfulness” un taller teórico experiencial; “Intervención con Padres en la Clínica Infanto-Juvenil” e “Introducción a la clínica de la Infancia”. IARPP-Chile también patrocinó un curso online acerca de la “Filosofía Perenne” organizado por miembros de nuestro capítulo. La recepción de estos cursos ha sido muy positiva.
Nuestro capítulo fue invitado a participar en dos diálogos vía Zoom con otras instituciones psicoanalíticas de Santiago. (ICHPA, NEL, APCH, APSAN). La primera trato del “Psicoanálisis en tiempos de Crisis”. IARPP-Chile estuvo representada por Carolina Besoaín, Víctor Doñas, Luz maría Parada y Andrea Rihm. En el otro diálogo, con las mismas instituciones, la invitación fue a discutir y comentar acerca del texto de Freud bajo la rúbrica de: “La vigencia de ‘El Malestar en la Cultura’”. Estuvimos representados por Víctor Doñas y Jaime Landa. Vale la pena destacar que la pandemia también ha traído efectos positivos inesperados como éste. La reunión en un diálogo respetuoso y fructífero de las diferentes escuelas psicoanalíticas que habitan en nuestro país.
El 25 de Octubre nuestra nación realizó un plebiscito para preguntar al pueblo si querían una nueva constitución y si así fuera, los medios para confeccionarla: ya sea una Convención Mixta, formada por miembros del Congreso y la comunidad; o una Convención Constitucional en la que solo estuvieran representados las diferentes sensibilidades y necesidades de las comunidades que se reunieron en la masiva manifestación de 1.200.000 personas, abogando por la restitución de la dignidad humana a la población, manifestación que se realizó el 25 de Octubre de 2019 justo un año antes del plebiscito. El 80% votó por una nueva constitución y una Convención Constituyente sin miembros del Congreso.
El conflicto a resolver por nuestra sociedad se encuentra bien expresado en la fotografía de más abajo.
Por un lado, la aspiración de una nueva constitución en la cual todos puedan sentirse representados, redactada desde la base hacia arriba, con paridad de género y con la inclusión de los pueblos originarios, simbolizada por la mujer con una bandera Chilena y una Mapuche en cada una de sus manos, su desnudez vulnerable envuelta por la constitución naciente. La esperanza para las nuevas generaciones puede estar representada por el niño en sus hombros. Esta imagen sobrepuesta sobre los rayados que expresan la diversidad y masividad de la protesta. El otro lado del conflicto también se puede visualizar: la policía, que ha actuado brutalmente, reprimiendo y violando los derechos humanos de los ciudadanos.
Nuestro capítulo ha organizado encuentros de sus miembros para compartir y comprender desde el vértice del psicoanálisis relacional los eventos políticos que han remecido los fundamentos de nuestra organización social. Estos encuentros fueron transmitidos en la edición del Boletín anterior. Continuaremos organizando jornadas para compartir y comprender cuales son las implicancias de una constitución, que por primera vez va a emerger desde la base. No será un camino fácil de transitar y queremos transitarlo junto a nuestros conciudadanos.
