Couples, Families and Groups Special Interest Group (SIG)

Since our last report about the Couples, Families and Groups Special Interest Group (SIG) activities, Phil Ringstrom (USA) presented an interesting therapy case that moved between couple and individual therapy. The complex case involved working with the couple, eventually continuing working with the husband individually, as well as some sessions with the wife, and then together again. The case involved severe pot addiction. As we have done previously, we presented the case in three parts, suggesting a particular discussion after each: 1) the couple and the couple therapy, until the shift to individual therapy; 2) the individual therapy; and 3) the rest of the case and a final discussion about the couple dynamics.

In mid-November, Morris Nitsun, a well-known British group analyst, passed away. He was famous for coining the term “the anti-group” and for his books about this term and about the group as an object of desire. Although we had planned to hold a different Zoom meeting next, we have decided instead to dedicate the next SIG discussion to Morris’ article about the anti-group as a way to commemorate him.
