Online Colloquia: Colloquium 20
This colloquium will be based on Samuel Gerson's IPA-award winning paper. The origins of psychoanalysis, Gerson reminds us, center on engagement with the unbearable - wish, affect, or experience. In the colloquium, we will focus on psychological processes and dynamics faced by survivors of trauma, the intergenerational transmission of trauma and the impact of this work on clinicians. We will look at Freud's theoretical formulations concerning memory and mourning, revisit Andre Green’s concept of the dead mother and introduce more recent work on the concepts of the third and thirdness. We will also be examining the various meanings and manifestations of bearing witness and the central role this plays in most psychoanalytic treatments. As usual, we will open the colloquium with 3-4 days of discussion amongst an international panel of psychoanalytic scholars representing a wide range of perspectives on this important subject. In this initial phase, the panelists and author will be responding to Gerson's paper and to each other's' comments. We will then open the floor to the entire community for continued discussion with all who care to respond and/or follow along. We look forward to a meaningful and engaging online conversation and hope that all of you will participate. So that those of you who want to prepare ahead of time can do so, we will send the reading to the entire IARPP community about a week before the May 7th start date. Galit Atlas-Koch and Steven Kuchuck CE for NASW-New York State for 3 contact hours is pending approval. Details on how to receive CE credit (evaluation and test) will be provided at the end of the Colloquium. The International Association for Relational Psychoanalysis & Psychotherapy (IARPP) is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. IARPP maintains responsibility for this program and its content. All IARPP members receive colloquium posts. There is no registration necessary to participate. |
