Candidates Committee

The Toronto conference gave us in the Candidates Committee the opportunity to connect with each other and so many other IARPP members in person. We welcomed our newest committee member, Frederico Bento (Portugal), who presented his paper, “Mutual Hate and Dissociation Post-Empire: Echoes of Portuguese Colonialism in Therapy,” during the conference. We also hosted two events, the Candidates Reception and the Candidates Panel.

On the second evening of the conference, shortly before the Candidates Reception was due to start, Margaret Black Mitchell (USA) enlisted the committee to gather up folks who may have been socializing in the lobby or browsing the books on display: “Let’s go grab some people for the reception. Tell them there’s wine.” Soon enough, people trickled in and found themselves in a warm and jovial microcosm of the larger conference. Afarin and Ignacio, our Co-Chairs, welcomed the group and made some announcements. There were laughs and hugs and whoops for good news, like Ignacio becoming the new Co-Chair, as well as more serious acknowledgments of who was unfortunately missing and greatly missed due to travel restrictions. What was reiterated throughout was the committee’s mission to reach candidates and emerging psychoanalysts, invite them into the fold, and nurture their perspectives as the future voices of IARPP and relational psychoanalysis (ahem, Frederico).

Which leads to the Candidate Panel that featured Florence Loh (Canada) presenting her paper, “Elastic Hate: Ferenczi, Mutuality, and the Limits of Empathy in the Consulting Room”; Patricia Barroilhet Bustamante (Chile) presenting hers, “A Snake in the Consulting Room: The Embodiment of Hatred in Analysis”; and committee member Ashleigh Ide (USA) presenting Masoomeh (Bita) Abdollah Ghapooch’s (Iran) paper “Seduction as a Shadow: Eroticized Hate in the Analytic Dyad.” Though she tried, Bita was sadly unable to make it to Toronto from her home in Iran.

Joyce Slochower (USA) presented her beautiful and encouraging discussion of all three papers in which she praised Florence, Patricia, and Bita for surviving, describing, and harnessing the power of hatred in extremely challenging treatments. All in attendance, senior clinicians, candidates, early career analysts, teachers, and supervisors nodded deeply in agreement with Joyce’s closing remark:

“It doesn’t really get better than that. And so I’m happy to be able to say that going forward, relational psychoanalysis will be in their very good hands.”

Finally we want to offer our warmest congratulations to our steadfast Executive Board Liaison, Fabia Banella (Italy), who by the end of the conference was elected President of IARPP. Though we on the Candidates Committee will feel the loss of her as our Board Liaison, we look forward to supporting her vision and leadership as President. Brava, Fabia!
