At His Essence

A group of us were systematically reading Freud with Lew, every Friday since September 2015 until a few weeks before he died. It was a terrific mix of deep scholarly engagement and irreverent playfulness. We had gotten to 1915 when Lew’s illness interrupted it. Til the very last day with us, as sick as he was, when he would open the Standard Edition, he would light up and be as full of passion and life as ever, transcending the limits of his own body. At particularly difficult moments around his illness we took to drinking Japanese bourbon, while pontificating about Freud, sex, and death. This is Lew at his essence! We miss him dearly.
